Intake and Exhaust VVT Solenoids Chevrolet Cruze 1.4L 2011-2016 Location and Replacement
In this video, I show you the exact location and replacement process for both the Intake and Exhaust Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Solenoids (also known as camshaft position actuator solenoids) on a 2011-2016 Chevrolet Cruze (first-generation model) equipped with the 1.4L engine. Knowing exactly where this pair of solenoids sits on the front of the valve cover and the correct steps to safely unbolt and swap them out is an essential part of a clean DIY engine performance fix, saving you time and keeping you organized before you break any oil seals.
Common symptoms of faulty or clogged VVT Solenoids include:
- An active Check Engine Light (CEL) on your dashboard, typically triggering specific valve timing performance trouble codes like P0010, P0011, P0013, or P0014.
- A rough, unstable engine idle, frequent stalling when coming to a stop, or a noticeable rattling/knocking noise coming from the top of the engine.
- Hesitation during acceleration, a severe drop in overall engine power, and poor fuel economy because the engine computer can no longer adjust the camshaft angles cleanly.
Safety First: The VVT solenoids control the flow of pressurized engine oil to the camshaft actuators. Never attempt to remove the solenoids or loosen their retaining bolts until the engine has been turned completely off and has cooled down to avoid severe skin burns from hot metal or escaping oil. Always keep a clean rag handy to catch any oil drips when pulling the solenoids out of the cylinder head, protect your hands and eyes by wearing durable gloves and safety glasses, and stay fully focused and attentive throughout the entire process.
