In this video, I show you the exact location and replacement process for the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor on a 2012-2020 Chevrolet Sonic equipped with the 1.8L engine. Mounted inline directly along the main air intake ducting—right between the engine’s air filter box and the throttle body—this sensor monitors the volume and temperature of the air entering the engine. Knowing how to cleanly disconnect the sensitive electrical harness plug and unbolt the sensor from the intake tube is a quick, five-minute DIY fix that can immediately restore your engine’s smooth idle and fuel efficiency.
Common symptoms of a dirty or faulty MAF sensor include:
- A Check Engine Light illuminated on the dashboard with stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) like P0101 (MAF System Performance), P0171 (System Too Lean), or P0172 (System Too Rich).
- A rough, erratic engine idle, sudden stalling at stoplights, or a noticeable hesitation and stumbling when you press the gas pedal to accelerate.
- Poor fuel economy and black smoke coming from the exhaust because the computer is miscalculating the engine’s air-to-fuel ratio.
Safety First: The MAF sensor uses a delicate, heated platinum wire element to sample incoming airflow, and it is highly sensitive to static electricity, grease, and contamination. Never touch the internal sensor elements with your fingers or spray them with standard lubricants or carburetor cleaners, as this will instantly ruin the sensor. Always ensure the ignition is completely off and the key is removed from the vehicle before unplugging the electrical connector to prevent sending false voltage spikes to the Engine Control Module (ECM). Protect your hands by wearing light work gloves, and stay fully focused and attentive throughout the process.
