ABS Control Module Chevrolet Traverse 3.6L 2009-2017 Location and Replacement
In this video, I show you the exact location and the complete step-by-step process to replace the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) control module on a 2009-2017 Chevrolet Traverse equipped with the 3.6L V6 engine.
The ABS control module—the electronic brain that manages your vehicle’s traction and braking safety—is attached directly to the aluminum hydraulic brake valve block assembly. On this generation of the Traverse, the entire ABS unit sits underneath the vehicle on the driver’s side, mounted to the frame rail right beneath the driver’s floorboard area. Because it is exposed to road debris, rust, and tight clearances under the vehicle, knowing how to clean the area, release the main harness clip, and back out the small Torx mounting screws without stripping them will save you time and prevent a massive headache.
Common Symptoms of a Bad ABS Control Module:
- The ABS warning light, Traction Control light, and StabiliTrak indicators stay permanently lit on the dashboard
- The brake pedal feels unusually stiff, uncharacteristically soft, or pulsates erratically during normal, dry-weather braking
- Total loss of anti-lock braking capability, causing the heavy SUV wheels to lock up and skid under sudden braking forces
- The speedometer behaves erratically, drops to zero, or transmission shifting becomes harsh due to lost wheel speed data
- Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to ABS internal module failure, pump motor circuits, or lost communication (such as U0121 or C0110)
Safety First
Always prioritize safety before tackling an advanced under-vehicle braking or electrical repair. Make sure the vehicle is safely parked on a flat, level surface, the emergency brake is securely engaged, and the ignition is turned completely off with the keys removed. You must securely support the vehicle on heavy-duty jack stands—never rely solely on a hydraulic jack while working underneath. Additionally, you must disconnect the negative battery terminal before starting this repair. This protects the sensitive microprocessors of the new module from unexpected voltage surges. Keep your work area extremely clean; wash away any road grime or rust flakes around the module before separating it from the hydraulic block, as even microscopic dirt entering the internal valves can ruin the braking system. Protect your eyes and skin by wearing safety glasses and fluid-resistant gloves throughout the task.
