How to find the paint code Chevrolet Malibu 2008-2012

In this video, I show you exactly how to find the factory paint code on a 2008-2012 Chevrolet Malibu.

Unlike older GM vehicles that used to hide this information under the trunk carpet or spare tire cover, this generation of the Malibu places it right in the driver’s door jamb. Finding this precise alphanumeric string is the absolute most important step before ordering any touch-up paint, a replacement side mirror, or body panels, ensuring you get a perfect color match instead of relying on a generic name like “silver” or “black.”

The Location: Where to Look

Open the driver’s side front door and look directly at the door pillar (jamb) below the latch mechanism. You will find a silver or white Service Parts Identification sticker containing the vehicle’s VIN, manufacturing dates, and a series of three-character option codes (RPO codes).

The paint code is located at the very bottom of this label.

How to Decode General Motors Paint Codes

GM formats their paint codes in a very specific way on the bottom of that sticker. You are looking for a line of text that typically starts with a “U” (which stands for Upper Body Color) followed by a 4-digit number, or a format like “BC/CC” (Basecoat/Clearcoat) followed by the code.

For example, look for formats like these:

• U815K (For Imperial Blue Metallic)
• U636R (For Silver Ice Metallic)
• U501Q (For Carbon Flash Metallic)
• BC/CC U 9260 (For Victory Red)

Pro Tip: When buying touch-up paint or ordering factory spray cans, paint manufacturers often drop the “U” and replace it with a “WA”. For example, if your Malibu sticker reads U636R, the universal GM paint code you will use to buy paint online or at an auto parts store is WA636R. Both refer to the exact same color mixture.
