Communication OnStar Control Module GMC Sierra 2007-2013 Location
Video Overview
In this video, I provide a direct and focused look at the exact location of the OnStar communication module (often referred to as the Vehicle Communication Interface Module or VCIM) in a 2007-2013 GMC Sierra. My goal is to help you locate this unit quickly, whether you are troubleshooting connectivity issues, performing a hard reset, or addressing a “Service OnStar” message on your dash.
Location Details
On these models, the OnStar module is tucked away inside the dash assembly to keep it protected and secure.
- The Specific Spot: It is located on the passenger side, behind the lower portion of the dashboard.
- Access: To reach it, you generally need to remove the passenger-side kick panel or, in some cases, the lower trim panel below the glove box. It is a metallic box with several thick wiring harnesses plugged into it.
Important Considerations for DIY
- System Integration: The OnStar module is part of the truck’s Data Link (GMLAN). Issues with the module can sometimes trigger strange symptoms in other systems, including the radio or the “Service Airbag” light, because the module is networked with the vehicle’s diagnostic system.
- The “Hard Reset”: If you are experiencing a communication glitch, many technicians perform a “power cycle” by disconnecting the module’s wiring harness for several minutes and then reconnecting it. This can sometimes clear internal memory errors.
- Subscription/Activation: If you are trying to “re-activate” a truck with an old OnStar system, be aware that many of these early modules relied on 2G or 3G cellular networks that have been sunset by telecommunications providers. Even if the module is functional, it may no longer be able to connect to modern cell towers.
Safety First
Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before unplugging the OnStar module. Because this module is connected to the vehicle’s CAN-bus network, handling the harness while the system is powered can cause short circuits or store “ghost” trouble codes in other modules (like the BCM or ECM). Wear safety glasses and ensure your workspace is well-lit.
About the Mechanic
I am a mechanic with extensive experience in the electronics and electrical systems of the GMT900 platform. I know that electronic gremlins can be the most frustrating part of owning a truck. If you are having issues with your radio, Bluetooth, or OnStar system, please let me know—often these issues are related to the radio itself or the data bus wiring rather than the OnStar unit specifically.
