Component Location Overview

On this DOHC (Dual Overhead Cam) engine, you will find both sensors mounted at the top of the cylinder head, near the timing cover/valve cover area. One is dedicated to the intake cam, and one to the exhaust cam. Safety Precautions
While these sensors are easy to reach, the area is sensitive:
- Engine Off: Always ensure the ignition is completely off. The sensors are delicate electronics; unplugging them while the system is powered can potentially trigger electrical faults in the ECM.
- Keep It Clean: The engine bay can accumulate a lot of dust. Before removing the sensors, use a clean brush or a burst of compressed air to clear the area around the sensor base. Any grit falling into the cylinder head when you pull the sensor out could damage your internal components.
- Fragile Connectors: The electrical plugs have locking tabs that get brittle from years of under-hood heat. Press the release tab firmly before pulling; do not force it, or you risk breaking the clip.
- Seal Integrity: The new sensors will come with new O-rings. Ensure the surface of the cylinder head is clean and smooth so the new O-ring can create a perfect, leak-free seal.
