Component Location Overview
On the 2005–2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse with the 3.8L V6 (the 6G75 engine), the Oil Control Valves (OCVs), also known as Variable Valve Timing (VVT) solenoids, are located on the top of the cylinder heads, near the timing cover area.
Because this is a V6 engine, you have two banks:
- Bank 1 (Rear/Firewall side): The OCV is located on the rear cylinder head, towards the passenger side of the engine.
- Bank 2 (Front/Radiator side): The OCV is located on the front cylinder head, also towards the passenger side.
They are small, cylindrical components bolted into the cylinder head with an electrical connector plugged into the top of them. Given the tight space of the 6G75 engine bay, you may need to reach over the intake manifold to access the rear bank.

- Rough Idle or Stalling: If the valve is stuck, it may force the timing into an aggressive profile at an inappropriate time, causing the engine to hunt for a stable idle.
- Significant Power Loss: You may notice the vehicle feels “flat” or sluggish, especially during acceleration, because the valve timing is not adjusting to optimize power across the RPM range.
- Engine Noise: In some cases, a faulty OCV can cause a slight rattling or ticking noise from the top of the cylinder head.
Safety Precautions
- Oil Quality is Everything: The OCVs are extremely sensitive to oil quality. Before replacing them, ensure your engine oil is clean and the correct viscosity. If the oil is sludgy, the new solenoids will fail just as quickly as the old ones.
- Keep It Clinical: Before removing the old solenoid, clean the area around the valve housing with a rag or compressed air. The moment you pull the solenoid out, you create an open path into the cylinder head; it is vital that no debris or grit falls into the engine.
- Handle the O-rings: These solenoids feature rubber O-rings that seal against the cylinder head. Always check that the old O-ring didn’t stay stuck in the engine head when you removed the old valve. A double-stacked O-ring will cause a massive, pressurized oil leak immediately upon startup.
- Battery Safety: Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal before disconnecting the electrical plugs, as the computer may attempt to cycle these valves upon ignition, and you don’t want to risk a short.
