Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor Chevrolet Malibu 2008-2012 2.4l Location, Removal & Installation
In this video, I show you the exact location and the complete step-by-step process to remove and install the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor on a 2008-2012 Chevrolet Malibu equipped with the 2.4L Ecotec 4-cylinder engine.
Mounted directly into the plastic air intake duct work just after the air filter housing, this sensor measures the volume and density of air entering your engine. Knowing how to carefully unclip its sensitive connector and back out the mounting screws without cracking the plastic intake tube will save you time and keep you from triggering extra lean codes during this common DIY fix.
Common Symptoms of a Bad Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor:
- The check engine light comes on, flagging specific MAF circuit or fuel trim codes like P0101, P0102, P0171, or P0172
- Severe engine hesitation, jerking, or stumbling during acceleration or when merging onto the highway
- A rough, erratic engine idle, or the vehicle stalling completely right after starting or at traffic lights
- A drastic drop in fuel economy or a rich-running condition accompanied by black smoke or a strong fuel smell from the exhaust
- A noticeable loss of overall engine power, making the vehicle feel sluggish or unresponsive
Safety First
Always prioritize safety before starting your repair. Make sure the vehicle is safely parked on a flat, level surface, the emergency brake is securely engaged, and the engine is completely turned off with the keys removed from the ignition. Turn the ignition off to ensure no power is being sent to the sensor circuits during the swap. Because the MAF sensor contains delicate, highly sensitive hot-wire elements inside, never touch the internal wires with your fingers or tools, and only use dedicated MAF sensor cleaner if you are attempting to service it. Protect your eyes and hands by wearing safety glasses and durable work gloves, and maintain your full focus throughout the task.
