Safety Precautions
Working with an engine’s pressurized cooling system requires extreme care:
- Engine MUST Be Cold: Never open the cooling system while the engine is hot. The system is under high pressure; opening the cap or a hose can result in scalding coolant spray. Wait at least 3–4 hours after the engine has been running.
- Manage Fluid Loss: Opening the housing will result in a significant coolant spill. Have a large drain pan ready and plenty of shop towels to keep the engine bay clean. Remember that antifreeze is toxic—keep it away from pets and properly dispose of it.
- “Burping” the System: This is the most critical post-repair step. Air pockets in the EcoBoost cooling system can cause dangerous hot spots. After filling the system, you must run the engine with the heat on high to “burp” out the trapped air until the level stabilizes.
- Surface Preparation: Ensure the mating surface on the engine block is perfectly clean before installing the new gasket. Any residue from the old seal will cause a persistent, annoying leak.
