Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Chevrolet Traverse 3.6L 2009-2017 Location and Replacement

In this video, I show you the exact location and the complete step-by-step process to clean or replace the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor on a 2009-2017 Chevrolet Traverse equipped with the 3.6L V6 engine.

The MAF sensor measures the amount of air entering your engine so the computer can inject the perfect amount of fuel. On this 3.6L V6, the MAF sensor is located right at the top of the engine bay on the driver’s side. It is mounted directly into the rigid plastic air intake duct pipe, just a few inches down-line from the air filter housing box. Because it sits completely in the open, it is one of the easiest DIY jobs on this vehicle. However, knowing how to handle its delicate internal sensing wires without damaging them and how to properly clear the electrical safety lock will save you time and prevent unnecessary diagnostic headaches.

Common Symptoms of a Bad or Dirty MAF Sensor:

  • The check engine light comes on, flagging specific air-metering or fuel-trim codes such as P0101, P0102, P0171, or P0174
  • A rough, shaking engine idle, unexpected stalling when coming to a stop, or general engine surging
  • Severe engine hesitation, stumbling, or a noticeable drag during hard acceleration or when merging onto the highway
  • A significant drop in fuel economy because the engine computer is miscalculating the air-to-fuel ratio and running too rich or too lean
  • Black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe or hard starting conditions in cold weather

Safety First

Always prioritize safety before performing any underhood electrical or air intake service. Make sure the vehicle is safely parked on a flat, level surface, the emergency brake is securely engaged, and the ignition is turned completely off with the keys removed from the ignition switch. You must ensure the ignition is off before unplugging the sensor to prevent sending an unexpected voltage spike to the Engine Control Module (ECM). Allow the engine bay to cool down slightly if you have been driving to avoid hot surfaces near the intake. Never touch the exposed internal wire elements inside the MAF sensor with your fingers or mechanical tools, as they are incredibly fragile and easily ruined. If you are cleaning the sensor instead of replacing it, use only dedicated MAF sensor cleaner spray—never use brake cleaner, carburetor spray, or compressed air. Protect your eyes and skin by wearing safety glasses and clean work gloves throughout the task.
