Thermostat Chevrolet Traverse 3.6L 2009-2017 Location and Replacement
In this video, I show you the exact location and the complete step-by-step process to replace the engine coolant thermostat on a 2009-2017 Chevrolet Traverse equipped with the 3.6L V6 engine.
Common Symptoms of a Bad Thermostat:
- The check engine light illuminates, typically flagging code P0128 (Engine Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature)
- The dashboard temperature gauge reads unusually low, fluctuates wildly, or takes an excessive amount of time to reach operating temperature
- The cabin heater blows lukewarm or completely cold air, even after driving the SUV for a long time (thermostat stuck open)
- The engine quickly overheats, causing the temperature gauge to spike into the red zone and triggering a “Engine Hot – Idle Engine” warning (thermostat stuck closed)
- Coolant actively leaks from the thermostat housing gasket, leaving puddles of orange Dex-Cool fluid on top of the transmission or under the vehicle
Safety First
Always prioritize safety before opening or servicing any part of the vehicle’s cooling system. Never attempt to remove the thermostat housing bolts or the coolant surge tank cap while the engine is hot. The cooling system operates under intense pressure; opening a hot system can cause boiling coolant to erupt violently, leading to severe burns. Make sure the vehicle is safely parked on a flat, level surface, the emergency brake is securely engaged, and the engine has cooled down completely. Place a clean drain pan beneath the engine/transmission area to catch escaping fluid, and protect your eyes and skin by wearing safety glasses and fluid-resistant work gloves throughout the process.
